Mimic is a language-practice app operated by BrightByte Lab ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information Mimic handles, where it goes, and the choices you have. It applies to the Mimic app for Android.
Mimic has no accounts. We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number or contacts, and your practice history stays on your device.
Stored on your device only. Your library, playlists, saved words and notes, practice history and streaks, daily usage counts and settings (such as your native and learning languages) are stored locally on your phone. We do not receive them. They may be included in your device's Android backup if you have backup turned on.
Microphone. Shadowing and Practice words ask for microphone access so you can record yourself. Audio is captured only while you are recording and is passed to your device's speech recognition service (usually provided by Google), which may process it on the device or online to turn it into text. Mimic does not upload your recordings. A copy of your latest take is kept temporarily in the app's cache on your device so you can replay it, and is deleted when you move on or clear the app's data. Practice words may also read a word aloud using your device's text-to-speech engine.
Text you choose to look up or explain.
Videos you open or import. Videos play in YouTube's embedded player. To show captions, Mimic requests the video's caption track, title and thumbnail from YouTube or from a third-party captions provider.
Collected automatically by the services we use.
We do not sell your personal information.
Mimic relies on the services below. Each processes data under its own privacy policy:
What Mimic stores stays on your device (or in your Android backup, if you have backup turned on) until you delete it in the app, clear the app's data or uninstall Mimic. Our AI Explain server does not store the text you send; it is passed to OpenAI to produce the explanation. Data held by the third-party services above is kept according to their own policies.
To delete your data: clear the app's storage or uninstall Mimic, reset your advertising ID in your device settings, and remove any Android backup in your Google account. Because Mimic has no accounts, we cannot look up data about you ourselves; for anything else, contact us below.
Mimic's own requests are sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, the UK or California), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information held about you, to object to or restrict how it is used, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Contact us below and we will help, including by pointing you to the service that holds the data. Our providers may process data in countries other than your own, including the United States.
Mimic is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has used Mimic in a way that shared their information, contact us and we will help.
We may update this policy when Mimic changes. The date at the top shows the latest version, and significant changes will be announced in the app or on its Google Play page.
